Before you arrive
Keep preparation simple
Clothing
Wear a clean T-shirt or fitted sports top with shorts or joggers. Avoid clothing with metal parts, zips or pockets that could catch.
Hygiene
Trim fingernails and toenails, remove jewellery and arrive in clean clothing. Bring footwear to wear whenever you are off the mats.
Timing
Arrive around ten minutes early. That gives the coach time to welcome you, show you the space and answer questions.
What to bring
Bring water and any essentials you normally need. Do not publish medical information in the online form; speak privately to the coach.
During the session

- 04
Next steps
Review what you learned and ask anything you are unsure about.
Good to know
You are not being tested
Nobody expects a new student to remember everything or move like an experienced grappler. Listen, ask questions, look after your training partner and focus on one useful detail at a time.
Explore beginner classesDo I need to be fit before starting BJJ?
No. Fitness improves as you train, and you can work at a sensible pace while you learn the movements.
Will I have to spar in my first class?
Sparring is introduced gradually. Speak to the coach when you arrive and only take part when the session and pace are appropriate for you.
Do I need to buy a gi first?
No. Clean sports clothing is suitable for an initial class. The academy can explain what you need if you continue with gi training.
What if I have an injury?
Tell the coach privately before training so the session can be approached sensibly. Seek medical advice when you are unsure whether exercise is appropriate.
