How classes work

Structure before intensity

Children learn best when expectations are clear. Sessions use age-appropriate explanation, repetition and supervised partner practice to build skill progressively.

Age groups

Younger children and older children train in separate programmes so teaching and expectations can suit their stage.

Partner work

Children are taught to cooperate with training partners, listen to instructions and stop when directed.

Progression

Movement, positions and controlled resistance are introduced as understanding and confidence develop.

Communication

Parents should share relevant concerns privately with the academy and ask how a particular class is managed.

Before class

A parent's checklist

  • Clean sports clothing without jewellery, metal parts or exposed zips
  • Short fingernails and toenails
  • Water and footwear for use away from the mats
  • Enough time to arrive, meet the coach and settle in
  • A private conversation with the academy about relevant concerns

Questions parents ask

What ages can join kids BJJ?

Innovation has programmes for children from age four, with separate groups for ages 4–7 and 8–15.

Does my child need martial arts experience?

No. New starters are introduced to the class structure, movement and partner work progressively.

What should my child wear?

Clean sports clothing is suitable for a trial. Avoid zips, jewellery and anything that could catch during movement.

Can I discuss an injury or additional need?

Yes. Speak privately with the academy before the class so the coach can understand what support may be appropriate.

All physical activity carries some risk. This guide explains the academy's intended class approach and does not replace a conversation about your child's individual circumstances or appropriate professional advice.
